Russian: vernacular form of learned Paraskeva, from Late Greek (megalē) paraskeuē (Good) Friday (from classical Greek paraskeuē preparation). A saint of this name is venerated in the Eastern Church as having been martyred in the 1st century, together with Photina, Joseph, Victor, Sebastian, Anatolius, Photius, Photis, and Cyriaca.
